Teenage Girls Pressured Into Sex

Previous research suggests that unwanted sex can lead to serious consequences including depression, anxiety and stress. Now research reports that many teenage girls feel pressured into having sex. The study found that unwanted sex was linked to a higher risk of sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancy.

The study, published in Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, investigated the prevalence of unwanted sex and its relationship to health-risk behaviors. Researchers at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis analyzed the data of 279 teenage girls, ages 14 through 17 years, being seen at urban primary health care clinics for teens. The participants were interviewed about their relationships and sexual behavior, including instances of unwanted sex, over a two year period. Cervical and vaginal specimens were obtained from the participants.

Researchers found that 41 percent of the teenage girls had unwanted sex. The most common reason given was fear of angering their partner if denied sex. Other issues linked with unwanted sex included unintended pregnancy, less condom use, lower relationship quality, lack of sexual control, and use of marijuana by their partner.

"Unwanted sex occurs often within the sexual relationships of teens," the study authors write. "These unwanted sexual experiences result in risk for sexually transmitted infections and pregnancies. Sexual health counseling to reduce risk should focus on both the patient's and the partner's behaviors."
