Research has shown that flavonoids, such as micronized purified flavonoid fraction (MPFF), improve venous strength and function and help treat venous disorders. The randomized, controlled study, published in the journal Diseases of the Colon and Rectum (2004, vol. 47, no. 5), investigated if a combination of MPFF with short-term antibiotic and anti-inflammatory treatment more effectively reduced postoperative symptoms and wound bleeding after hemorrhoidectomy than antibiotic and anti-inflammatory treatment alone.
Italian researchers from Universita degli Studi di Roma La Sapienza, in Rome, Italy, administered a combination of MPFF with short-term antibiotic and anti-inflammatory treatment or a routine short-term antibiotic and anti-inflammatory treatment (control) to 50 patients following a Milligan-Morgan's open hemorrhoidectomy. Self-questionnaires assessing post-operative symptoms were obtained from the patients daily for the first three post-operative days, then every 14 days until post-operative day 60. A global score for each symptom (pain, tenesmus, pruritus, and bleeding) was used.
The researchers found that post-hemorrhoidectomy symptoms were relieved significantly more quickly in the MPFF group, as compared to the control group. Findings also revealed that the global symptom scores were significantly lower for the MPFF group as compared to the control group over the entire study period of 60 days.
"Micronized purified flavonoid fraction used in combination with short-term antibiotic and anti-inflammatory treatment can reduce both the duration and extent of postoperative symptoms and wound bleeding following hemorrhoidectomy," the study authors conclude.
