The multicenter, non-randomized, observational study, published in the journal Surgeon (2004, vol. 2, no. 6), investigated the efficacy of Daflon (MPFF) in the treatment of hemorrhoidal symptoms. Researchers from Dammam Central Hospital in Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia, administered Daflon, four tablets a day in two divided doses, to 268 patients with hemorrhoid symptoms, for four weeks. A proctoscopy and symptoms assessment were obtained from the participants weekly during the study period.
The researchers found a statistically significant improvement in all hemorrhoidal symptoms, including pain, heaviness, bleeding, pruritus, and anal discharge, following Daflon treatment. Findings also revealed a significant improvement in the proctoscopic appearance of hemorrhoids following Daflon treatment, as compared to baseline visit findings.
"Daflon has been shown to be effective in alleviating (variable degree) hemorrhoidal symptoms and improving the proctoscopic appearance of hemorrhoids. Therefore, it should be considered initially for patients presenting with hemorrhoidal symptoms," the study authors write. "However, prospective randomized trials and longer follow-up are needed to confirm the findings of this study and delineate more precisely the role of Daflon in the management of hemorrhoidal disease."
