For people suffering from depression or depressive symptoms marriage can actually boost mood. This is according to findings from Ohio State University that were presented at the American Sociological Association's annual meeting in Montreal last month.
The study was conducted with the thoughts that marriage may actually negatively impact those with depression because of the added stress, but the findings were contrary. And the lead researchers are not disappointed.
For individuals suffering from depression they actually found less reported symptoms such as insomnia and persistant sadness, complaints that are common in depression, after the wedding compared to before the wedding.
The study authors felt that perhaps these individuals needed a greater sense of security or intimacy that was gained once they tied the knot.
They also elaborated on the effects marriage had on those who were happy prior to the marriage. In these people marriage to a depressed person may negatively impact their happiness as would a marriage that did not fair well.
