Gingko biloba, a powerful antioxidant herb, contains flavonol glycosides that improve blood flow and oxygen supply to tissues. Flavonoids, such as hydroxyethylrutosides (Troxerutin) and micronised purified flavonoid fraction (MPFF), have been shown to improve venous strength and function and are used for the treatment of venous disorders. Now research has found that a combination of gingko biloba and flavonoids effectively treats hemorrhoid symptoms.
In one clinical study, 22 patients with acute hemorrhoids were administered a combination of Gingko biloba-Troxerutin- Heptaminol Hce for one week. At the end of the study, the patients showed a significant improvement in symptoms including a reduction of pain, bleeding, tenesmus (the continuous urge to defecate), and discharge. "In the short-term, Gingko biloba - Troxerutin - Heptaminol Hce is effective, acceptable and safe in the treatment of patients with acute hemorrhoidal attacks," the study authors conclude. (1)
A recent review finds that MPFF and gingko biloba have been effective in the treatment of hemorrhoids or as an adjunct to invasive outpatient hemorrhoid procedures. MPFF and gingko have been used for relief of acute hemorrhoid symptoms including control of bleeding and re-bleeding in all grades of hemorrhoids. "MPFF has been recommended for control of acute bleeding in patients waiting for a definitive outpatient treatment," the study authors write. (2)
