Diosmin (phlebodia), a flavonoid glycoside, has been used to treat venous insufficiency. Fiber supplements, such as psyllium, have been used as bulking agents to treat and prevent hemorrhoids. Now a study reports that a combination of diosmin and fiber supplements effectively relieves hemorrhoidal bleeding.
The study, published in the journal Acta Chiurgica Iugoslavica (2005, vol. 52, no. 1), investigated the efficacy of diosmin (phlebodia) and psyllium (plantago ovata) supplementation in the treatment of bleeding nonprolapsed hemorrhoids. Croatian researchers administered diosmin and psyllium daily for three months to 60 patients with hemorrhoidal bleeding. Total colonoscopy was performed according to the age, symptoms, and genetic factors of the participants.
The researchers found that the participants' hemorrhoidal bleeding stopped after two to three days, following diosmin and psyllium fiber supplementation. "Diosmin, used with fiber supplements, rapidly and safely stops bleeding from nonprolapsed hemorrhoids," the study authors conclude.
