Benefits of Pilates

Category: Fitness

Pilates (pronounced puh-LAH-teez) is a system of body conditioning exercises designed to develop the body's core muscles, including the abdominals, low back, pelvis, and gluteals. Although Pilates is one of the hottest trends within the fitness industry, it's hardly new. The discipline was developed nearly a century ago by German-born Joseph H. Pilates. Pilates worked as a nurse during World War I and taught his method to wounded soldiers to help them recover their range of motion. He devised spring-based apparatus to support and assist them, in conjunction with matwork exercises.

Pilates called his system of exercises "The Art of Contrology," requiring complete concentration and muscle control. Pilates was an extraordinary physical testament to his method. He applied his techniques to sports and exercise and was an exceptional gymnast, yoga practitioner, boxer, diver, and skier. After the war, Pilates immigrated to New York and began working with injured dancers, performers, and athletes. Since that time, Pilates' body-mind approach to fitness has maintained a devoted following in health clubs and rehabilitation communities.

Although many exercises are still done using Pilates' spring-based equipment, his floor workout requiring only an exercise mat is considered just as effective. Strengthening the core muscles in the back and pelvis with Pilates exercise anchors the body and helps keep the spine properly aligned in movement. Instead of working the core muscles only superficially, the Pilates' method works the deeper muscle fibers below the surface. Neglecting the core muscles sets you up for injury. By strengthening them with Pilates exercise, you can prevent and treat injuries, improve your posture, strengthen your back, increase your flexibility, and create a sleeker shape.
