Benefits Appear Quickly with Lifestyle Changes

When patients are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome, and are assessed as being overweight or obese, diet and exercise are usually recommended. Until now, most researchers and physicians thought that benefits from lifestyle changes took time to materialize and required significant weight loss. However, a new study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology showed that only 3 weeks of exercise and dietary changes resulted in reversal of the clinical diagnosis of type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome in about half the participants who had those diseases.
Thirty one men participated in the study, 15 of which had metabolic syndrome and 13 had type 2 diabetes. The diet was low in fat (12-15% of calories), moderate in protein (15-20% of calories), and high in unrefined carbohydrates (65-70% of calories) and fiber (more than 40 grams). Subjects could consume unlimited calories except for meat and dairy. Protein sources included plant proteins (like soy, beans and nuts), non-fat dairy, fish and poultry. Whole grains, and a variety of vegetables and fruits were consumed. The men also exercised 45 minutes daily, using a treadmill to reach 70-85% of their maximum heart rate. This study shows that lifestyle changes significantly effect status of chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, when followed (which is the key). Patients often know they should be exercising and eating better, but they often don't follow through. Knowing that results can be produced in such a short period of time may be a better motivator.
