Optimum Nutritionís 100% Casein Protein

Description

Optimum Nutritionís 100% Casein Protein Blend is a delayed-release, micellar casein-based protein powder. It includes a micellar casein protein blend, BCAAs (branched chain amino acids), glutamine and aminogen. 100% Casein Protein is formulated to be taken whenever delayed protein release is desired, such as bedtime when the body goes for hours without food.

The micellar casein proteins promote a steady release of proteins for maximum nitrogen retention (stored muscle protein). Although rapid protein digestion is desirable before or after exercise, delayed protein digestion and absorption is desirable throughout the remainder of the day. Casein proteins take up to 7 hours to be digested - more than twice as long as other proteins (such as whey). As a result, casein proteins are described as muscle-protecting, anti-catabolic (prevents muscle breakdown) proteins.

The addition of BCAAís leucine, valine and isoleucine and conditionally essential amino acid glutamine help prevent muscle tissue breakdown and support muscle repair. Aminogen is a naturally derived, patented plant enzyme that aids in protein digestion and assimilation.

Pros

100% Casein Protein delivers 24 grams of casein blend protein, over 9 grams of BCAAís and glutamine and only 3 to 4 grams of carbs per serving. It is instantized, for instant mixability.

100% Protein Blend has the following benefits:

  • 24 grams of delayed-release casein proteins
  • BCAAs and glutamine support muscle repair and recovery
  • Promotes lean muscle gain and prevents muscle breakdown
  • Aminogen aids protein digestion and assimilation

Cons

People who are allergic to dairy products should avoid casein protein. Few side effects are associated with glutamine supplementation. However, mega-dosing with glutamine over an extended period of time may result in potential side effects such as diarrhea, weakness and nausea.

Pregnant or lactating women, people with pre-existing medical conditions or those taking medication should consult with a physician before taking 100% Casein Protein.

Be aware that some drugs may interact with 100% Casein Protein including but not limited to:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Cisplatin
  • Cyclophosphamide
  • Docetaxel
  • Fluorouracil
  • Methotrexate
  • Paclitaxel

Is it for you?

If youíre looking for a delayed-release protein formula, then 100% Casein Protein is for you.

However, pregnant or lactating women, people with pre-existing medical conditions or those taking medication should consult with a physician before taking 100% Casein Protein.

Dosage & Directions

Mix one scoop with 10 to 12 ounces of cold water, low fat milk or your favorite beverage. Stir, shake or blend for 20 seconds, or until dissolved.

Take first thing in the morning, immediately before bed, in place of small meals, and/or any other time when delayed protein absorption is desired.

To support positive nitrogen balance (stored muscle protein), consume approximately 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight, split evenly over 4 to 6 small meals daily. For example if you weigh 150 lb, you would need 30 grams of protein five times per day. Store in a cool, dry place.

Personally i thought the casein tastes good. I mix it into oatmeal occasionally and into protein shakes with a blender using ice and milk and it dissolves well, tastes pretty good. Get a blender and this stuff works great. If you're serious about your protein I'd highly recommend this for before bed and when post/pre workout isn't coming, I also find that it fills me up a bit more than whey would. I made a good choice of this product.
