6-OXO’s androstenetrione is an inhibitor of aromatase, an enzyme that converts androgen substrates (i.e. testosterone) to estrogen. Androstenetrione binds to and inactivates the aromatase enzyme, resulting in lower levels of estrogen. This signals the brain to increase testosterone production to compensate for the blocked estrogen production. Testosterone levels then rise, along with estrogen levels. A new, higher baseline of testosterone is established, and normal levels of estrogen are maintained.

In a clinical study, researchers administered 600 mg daily of 6-OXO to 6 healthy males 32 to 40 years old. After three weeks, the researchers found that total testosterone levels increased an average of 188%, while free testosterone levels increased an average of 226%. Changes in estrogen (estradiol) levels were slight but not statistically significant. No adverse changes were observed in cholesterol, liver function, kidney function or immune function.
